Jaylen’s Birth Story

Im001551-3.JPG

We’re home! We got home around noon today. Jai and Jay are doing great – we all had a great Christmas. Ooh – Merry Christmas, by the way.

It’s been almost two and half days, but I still cannot get over how EASY it was to give birth to this little boy. It is honestly the easiest labor I have ever heard of. So easy that I’m almost jealous of myself.

I was really exhausted already – I had a house full of people and we were up until about 100am. Jai and I were (are) still sick, and so between being nervous and having her flop around on the bed next to my mom and I, I got about an hour of sleep. I was out of bed around 530am – my body was doing things that mean labor is on its way – and so I just called the hospital, showered, and waited around. I remember mentioning that I thought I might be going into labor on my own, but I just thought maybe it was all in my head.

We got to the hospital around 815am and I was admitted, etc. I was hooked up to an IV and all of the monitors. Meanwhile, we were just waiting on the doctor. I felt like I was contracting, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as with Jaiden, so I thought they were probably just Braxton-Hicks contractions. They were coming about every five or six minutes or so. I wasn’t in any pain, really. My mom and Bryan were just hanging around, prepared for a long day. We started pitocin at 940am and my nurse came in every few minutes to turn it up. Obviously, my contractions were getting stronger and closer together, but they weren’t completely unbearable.

My doctor showed up and checked me – I was 3-4 centimeters dilated. He broke my water at 1017am and the pitocin was turned all the way up. He predicted that I’d have the baby by 1215pm. When he left, we were all wondering what the heck he was talking about. We all thought I’d deliver closer to 100 or 200pm, including my nurse. My contractions were getting more intense and the nurse asked if I wanted an epidural. YES.

The anestheologist came in and did what he had to do at 1100am. This was THE WORST part of the labor and delivery. Getting the epidural hurt so much – far worse than the contractions. I broke down and started crying – it was the only part where I cried. Bryan’s sister, her boyfriend, and Jaiden walked in on me getting the epidural – they got mooned in a serious way (I was laying down on my side while getting it). I could have cared less, though. I was in too much pain to care, but I found it hysterical.

After the anestheologist left, I was furious at him. During my last delivery, the anestheologist was my best friend. This guy was my worst enemy. I hated it. I started shaking a little bit and Bryan’s uncle was nice enough to sit there and hold my hand. I was having contractions that went off the chars in intensity, yet I felt nothing. We sat around and watched Price Is Right while I contracted away. Jaiden was in the room and just kinda looked at me, wondering why I was in a hospital bed. Less than an hour after getting the epidural, I was checked and I was at 8 centimeters.

A few minutes later, I start feeling pressure with my contractions. It felt like I was pushing, just I didn’t feel any pain. I got really worried and told them to get a nurse because it felt like he was coming out. She came in and he wasn’t coming out, but I was fully dilated. They called my doctor and started setting up for delivery. We began to think that Dr. C. wasn’t a lunatic.

Everyone kept asking me if I remembered how to push. It took me two hours to push Jaiden out. I started pushing at 1229pm and he was born one minute later – at 1230pm! It only took two or three pushes. The best part was that I only felt the pressure – and even that didn’t hurt. I couldn’t believe it was so easy. It was a painless delivery. I would never believe it if I didn’t experience it.

Jaylen’s APGAR scores were 8 and 9. He had to have a bit of oxygen for a minute following the delivery. Bryan, his sister, and my mother were all present for his arrival. Bryan’s parents, uncle, brother-in-law, and Jaiden were waiting in the waiting room. Actually, some of them went to smoke, thinking it’d be awhile. The hospital is a maze and Jaylen was probably born before they ever got out of the building.

Jaylen weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 20 inches long (the same as Jaiden). He looks just like Jaiden did when she was born – except his nose is a little different. He has some light brown hair on his head, but it’s nowhere as dark or thick as Jaiden’s was. He is a lot quieter than Jaiden was, too. You can hardly hear him when he cries (you could hear Jaiden around the entire maternity ward).

We’re doing wonderfully with recovery. I am not in any pain, except for my back (where I got the epidural). I’m not sore and I can get around like a regular person. I was a little exhausted yesterday – I got almost no sleep the night before because Jaylen wasn’t nursing properly. I sat up with the nurse while he was given a bottle. He’s doing a lot better now that my milk has come in. I had a discouraging experience with breastfeeding Jaiden for the first week and I was afraid of the same thing this time around. Hopefully we won’t have any problems. I’m still really sick – darn cold or something – and I’ve had a horrible headache, earache, and sore throat in addition to coughing and congestion. I can’t beat this thing.

Jaiden hasn’t shown any real signs of being jealous. She loves to kiss Jaylen and give him hugs. She also likes to point to him and call him “ba ba” (“baby”). She’s very curious about breastfeeding.

Okay, whew. I have to stop here so that I can get some much-needed and well-deserved sleep. Here’s his birth announcement from the hospital’s website. He looks identical to Jaiden (view image).

We make the cutest babies, huh?

More pictures to come .. but right now I’m going to go and enjoy my bed. Yay.

OMG!!! Congratulations!!! 😀 I am so jealous of your delivery! What an awesome experience (minus, the epidural, of course). 🙂 I also want to congratulate you on the “soft cry” that Jaylen has. LOL When I had Jake, I was *in shock* because here was this loud, screaming thing when I’d expected the softly crying baby. I’ll always wonder what it’s like to have a baby with a soft cry. 😉 LOL Congratulations again!!! Get that rest. You did awesome! What a gorgeous family. 😀
