I am so frustrated with Jaiden’s school today.
First of all, the first day of school is this upcoming Thursday, Aug. 2. That is so freakin’ early! It is the beginning of AUGUST for Heaven’s sake, and they finished right before Memorial Day weekend. They get two months and one week for a break. In Virginia they get two and a half months. It just seems so SHORT to me. They should wait until mid-August at least. Anyway, it will start saving me some money in childcare. Eventually, I mean.
They are scheduled for a half day that first day, 8-11:30 a.m. Yesterday I found out that the next day of school, the first full day, isn’t until Tuesday, Aug. 7. What’s the point of that half day?
I called this morning to see if we could find out who her teacher was, but the school won’t tell me. The way they want to work things is have parents bring the kids in on that Thursday morning, check a list, then take the kids to their classroom, meet the teacher, make sure everything’s okay, then leave. So parents will be leaving the school around 8:30-9 a.m. And then we have to come back two hours later to get in the carpool line. (Some kids ride the bus, but not my child.) That’s pretty much a waste of a half of a days’ worth of work.
Additionally, our sitter is in another town, 30 minutes away, so I have to take the other two to the sitter’s house, come back to our town, do all of that with Jaiden, then after school take her all the way back to the sitter’s house before going back to work. So, really, it will be 12:30 p.m. by then, at the earliest.
Ugh. Annoying.
Come to find out, though, that Kindergarten parents have a meeting at 8:30 a.m. that first day of school. So we can meet the teachers. And get our child’s staggered schedule for the following week. And I think that is crap. The editor and I both have kids in Kindergarten, so both of us will be gone and not working on the paper, which is what happens on Thursdays. Where I come from we have Back to School night where parents meet the teachers and get specific supply lists and things like that. Most parents around here work during the day! Why can’t we do the logical thing and hold the meeting at night?
When I registered her for Kindergarten we received a Kindergarten parent packet with lists and letters and dates for things. That was in MARCH, though. Next week it will be AUGUST. How are you supposed to remember those things? Parents are busy! Send reminders in the mail! And answer the phones at the school when parents call! Jaiden missed the Kindergarten Round-Up because of those reasons – and I had long forgotten about the parents’ meeting.
I love her school but MAN, I am frustrated today.
